Keeping our homes in order does not excuse our refrigerators which may just need the same attention as any other corners in the house. When the refrigerator is neatly arranged, we can enjoy a number of benefits. We don't have to take out stuff just to be able to get what we want which may have been pushed far inside. We don't have to get sick from molds, mildew or anything that could grow in an unmaintained fridge. We don't have to eat old foods (because we have forgotten to take it out after they expire) and we don't have to cringe each time we accidentally taste them. For health and sanitary reasons, we need to keep our refrigerators clean and organized and there's no use denying the benefits.
We can begin by allotting time for this task. We can be so busy but maintaining a fridge that will not expose us to health risks is a worthwhile activity that we need to fit into our schedules, no matter how hectic we are. During this time, we need to take our minds away from office work or from anything that could preoccupy us. Usually, the tendency is for us to take this activity for granted that even a single insignificant phone call can distract our attention and tempt us to stop in the middle and decide to finish it later. And we usually never do. Cleaning a refrigerator, especially if it hasn't been cleaned in a while, can take a whole morning, so be sure to dedicate your time to this task if you are to do it.
If you've vowed to clean your fridge at least once a week (recommended), a very good thing to do first is to take out everything that you will not be wanting nor needing anymore. In other words, pull out expired foods and leave only those you would still want to keep. It's funny because people sometimes leave foods in the fridge not because they still want to eat it but just because they have some sort of sentimental values. Processed food given as a gift by a lover who has just come from an out-of-the-country travel, for example, can be stored in fridge for as long as the relationship lasts. It's funny but even food can, after all, have sentimental value to some people. But fact remains that spoiled food means health risks and space wasted in the refrigerator. Thus, everything should be taken out and only food fit for human consumption must be left inside.
To make way for cleaning each nook and cranny of the fridge, everything else must be taken out as well. All the compartments of the fridge should be cleaned with a smooth damp cloth dipped in a soapy solution from time to time. This will leave the thing spotless and healthier for food storage. Once all portions of the fridge have been cleaned, it's time to return food items, but it will be a good idea to put a sense of organization into how they will be arranged. For example, all bottled items must be placed in one section, all dairy products in another section and so on. This will not be very hard to do as long as one is genuinely interested in keeping his fridge clean and health risk-free.
