Your washing machine is a force to be reckoned with when it comes to nasty laundry tasks. If you wash dirty stains off your garments manually, it would surely take you the whole day. But all the dirt and gunk your washer has removed from your clothes are not disposed well. Some of them can still take up residence in your washing machine.

If you haven't been cleaning your washer lately, you shouldn't be surprised if it starts to have off-putting smell. But don't worry. With the help of the following cleaning tips, you can bring back fresh-smelling washer in no time.

1. If molds and mildew are the main causes of the problem, you can dissolve or loosen them up with the help of distilled white vinegar. For molds that have formed inside the washer, run an empty warm water cycle and add two cups of white vinegar. Let it churn and dissolve the molds inside.

Molds also form easily on the rubber gasket of front load washers. Try preparing a mixture of water and distilled white vinegar. Treat the gaskets with this mixture. Let the solution stay there for about 30 minutes until the molds have loosened up. Use towel to remove the debris.

3. Clean the filter of the machine. Unplug your washer and pull it forward gently. Turn the water source off. Remove the hose from the faucet and remove the filter inside the hose. Wash the filter in running water. If debris have hardened up, you can try soaking it in vinegar.

Use soft-bristled brush to remove the debris. Wash the filter in soapy water and let it dry completely before placing it back to the water hose.

4. If the smell is caused by dirt or stains, try running an empty water cycle. Add a cup of lemon juice to deodorize the interior of the machine. Pause the washer function for about 15 minutes to let the lemon juice remove unwanted dirt smell. After 15 minutes, resume the cycle and let the machine flush out water. Dry the interior of the machine with an absorbent towel. Open the door of the washer to allow air to circulate inside. Your washer now smells like lemon!
